Even before entering prison, incarcerated people are more likely to have experienced abuse and trauma than those on the outside. The effects of this earlier trauma follow people into incarceration, and this trauma is exacerbated by the dehumanization of the criminal justice system. Irritability and aggressive behavior are also common responses to trauma, making incarcerated people more vulnerable to substance abuse, PTSD, depression, and criminal behavior. How can we break the cycle of trauma and shift our focus away from incarceration and toward rehabilitation?
In this episode of Hey, I’m Listening, Dr. Joan speaks with Dr. Zaria Davis about The Trauma of Incarceration
