According to research, the number of incarcerated women increased by more than 475% between 1980 and 2020, rising from 26,326 in 1980 to 152,854 in 2020. Unfortunately, women in prison are not provided with the necessary amenities to maintain their health. The current provision of health care to imprisoned women falls far short of what is required by human rights and international recommendations in far too many cases.
