Black female creatives have been on the rise in recent years. More women are starting businesses, putting their work out there, and gradually gaining visibility. As we consider Elevating the visibility of women creatives during Women’s History Month, we also have to shed light on some of the struggles Black women creatives face such as getting past the gatekeepers and access to funding. Black women are less likely to receive external funding and are more likely to fund their businesses with personal or borrowed funds.

Oby Chiapa is an Operations Manager at a New York Based Project, Program, and Construction Services Consulting firm. She is an agent for progressive change and believes that people will do better if they have the right resources and encouragement to see them through. In June 2020, she launched a podcast called On the Matterr and her mission is to humanize success by sharing authentic stories of people actively working on their goals.
