We don’t often think about the re-entry of incarcerated people and those in the justice system into the family and society. The victims, perpetrators of crime, and law enforcers often share the same physical environment and this creates a partner of recurring traumas when they go into society. How can we design a trauma-informed justice system that allows families who are justice-involved to heal holistically?
In this episode of Hey, I’m Listening, Dr. Joan speaks with Dr. Nneka about The Relationship Between Trauma and Incarceration
Dr. Nneka Jones Tapia is the Managing Director of Justice Initiatives at Chicago Beyond. She is an experienced psychologist passionate about mental wellness, criminal justice reform, and supporting people who have experienced trauma. Since joining Chicago Beyond in 2018, Dr. Tapia has collaborated to launch programs focused on positive family engagement for justice-involved families, holistic healing support within Chicago Public Schools, and peer-led healing support for youth. She is the former warden of Cook County jail in Chicago, Illinois – one of the largest single-site jails in the country. Under her leadership, Cook County Jail implemented several bold strategies to promote wellness for people incarcerated and staff, including the Mental Health Transition Center, a program that has helped hundreds of people who have been incarcerated to successfully reenter their families and communities.
